Inland Waterways
The Council meets in the INLAND WATERWAYS SECTOR in order to take decisions on policies and action to be implemented by Waterways Ireland. The Joint Communiqués following the Council meetings are listed below.
Functions/Objectives
Waterways Ireland's primary function is the management, maintenance, development and restoration of the inland navigable waterway system throughout the island, principally for recreational purposes. Waterways Ireland is responsible for the following navigation systems which were previously under the control of the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs in the South and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Northern Ireland.

- The Lower Bann Navigation System
- The Royal Canal
- The Shannon Navigation System
Waterways Ireland is also charged with taking forward further studies and appraisals in relation to the possible restoration of the Ulster Canal.
Waterways Ireland's Headquarters is in Enniskillen with Regional Offices in Scarriff, Co Clare, Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim and Dublin.
Waterways Ireland does not have a Board. The Chief Executive for Waterways Ireland is Mr John Martin.

The Exchange of Notes between the British and Irish Governments on 19 November 2002 (Cmnd 5708), provides for decisions and actions relating to the Implementation Bodies and Tourism Ireland Limited or their respective functions to be taken by the two Governments.
